How Healthy Can You Be at 85?
The ILC-USA and the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics & Adult Development of Mount Sinai School of Medicine will host Dr. Rudi Westendorp , Head of Leiden University Medical Center's gerontology and geriatrics in The Netherlands, at the annual Harold Hatch Lecture in Geriatrics & Gerontology.
How Healthy Can You Be at 85? will explore Dr. Westendorp's Leiden 85-plus study, which tracks cognitive decline and risk factors for heart disease, stroke, and other illnesses in people 85 and older.
Prof. Westendorp is currently the head of Leiden University Medical Center's gerontology and geriatrics department. In addition to presiding over the long-running Leiden 85-plus study, Prof. Westendorp came up with an innovative and inexpensive way to explore the evolutionary trade-off between longevity and fertility: analyzing old genealogical records of British aristocrats. He is also exploring a biological explanation for his tradeoff by investigating whether immune defenses might play a role. Twelve innovative in-home caregiver training programs are being awarded up to $25,000 through the ILC's Community College Caregiver Training Initiative of the Caregiving Project for Older Americans, supported by MetLife Foundation.
“The number of high-quality training programs submitted was exceptional,” Dr. Kenneth Knapp, project manager for the Caregiving Project and senior research analyst at the ILC-USA. “We hope this initiative continues to highlight the important role community colleges can play in training our nation’s professional and family caregivers.”
The need for more training is an urgent one, as increasing numbers of people are finding it difficult to obtain affordable, quality in-home care for older adults. The available pool of family caregivers is shrinking, and at the same time, the caregiving profession is experiencing a severe and worsening shortage of paid caregivers. The Caregiving Project for Older Americans seeks to address this need by encouraging community colleges to develop new, creative programs that train both family and professional in-home caregivers.

In effort to develop inventive solutions for living independently, the ILC will gather leading experts on aging, public policy, consumer advocacy, health care, social work and technology to collectively draw up a detailed vision of an ideal aging-in-place environment.
The two-part series is being funded with a research grant from Philips Electronics’ Home Healthcare business.
“One of the biggest fears of growing older is losing independence,” says Dr. Robert Butler, president and CEO of the ILC-USA. “By 2025 one out of every five Americans is projected to be age 65 and older. As this new generation of older adults emerges we must put greater emphasis and resources into developing living environments that provide older people the ability to maintain their independence and enhance their quality of life into old age.”
The first part of the series was held on September 24. On November 20, participants will address issues standing in the way of creating their ideal environment, and recommend solutions to those challenges.Read MoreArticle Tools: Print Story Email Story RSS Feed
